World Is Flat -A Good Book

I reread this wonderful book by Thomas Friedman in this diwali vaction. This was book about “Ageless Globalization from Its Infancy to adulthood........".
This is first world book and I happened read the same from third world environment.
Why I am saying this is that the place where i stayed had only one vista opened to the outside world was- Radio and erratic power supply in a remote village in Mahabubnagar of AP Province in INDIA.

Reading from such a place where farmer’s suicides are common and abject poverty is just stone throw away. Where people believe that "Cow foot disease" can be cured with "Mantras"(chants) and Medicine made out of Leaves" Not with " English Medicine(Allopathic)" (My own cattle suffering from this disease with their bleeding legs -they always welcome me to the village with their affection- nodding heads. I always repay their affection with "Bananas" -that I customarily buy before heading to my village). To my surprise they (villagers) healed the disease with "Country Medicine".

Given the backdrop I was sitting in, this is most unlikely place to read this book. I believe never anybody talked this book- "World is Flat" sitting in the typical third world. The reason I was giving much importance to describe the place I happened to read was to drive home the point that-with globalization you can really narrow down the differences between the "Third world" and "First World" .It is the only force on the earth which can make the cast, creed barriers out of fashion.

Let me tell you how my personal account of how globalization make the "Third World" worry about "First World" .I have a brother who works in Chicago, USA. It was in 2003.I was doing my masters in engineering from IIT Roorkee- is 1700Kms away from my village that is not connected telephonically. There was a power shut down in "New York City" -complete black down. My father who happened to read the same in next day vernacular daily, travelled to nearby town to call me up to enquire about "If brother is safe?" .

Read it carefully to understand this -If something happens in USA that is hurting somebody who sits in remote village with third world amenties. This only can happen in the places that are connected by "Globalization”. This also saying one more thing USA, INDIA relations are so intertwined that what hurts USA hurts India as well.

And when it comes to the book:

This is an excellent book starts with who are all inspired "Tom" to write this book-many of them are Indians. He went on say what are the major events that propelled the globalization to take shape that it is in today-Berlin wall fall,Netscape,Apache many more. How outsourcing helps Americans and Non- Americans? And the survival tactics that one need employ to stay first in the "Global Competition".

There is chapter on "Supply chain management" it was very dear to my heart -, he talks about so many latest technologies involved in the "Supply chain" such as "Voice Picking" and many more. It is we (the company i work for-Manhattan Associates) from India that supports all these across the world including the one he talks about in the book.

He also talks about how we should scale up and down ourselves to stay competitive in the "Globalization". Each and everybody have got something or the other to learn from this great book. Particularly the guys in IT industry must read this book because they are more vulnerable to "Global Competition".

I wish this book should be there in everybody's personal library. This is one such book -more and more perspectives you get more and more times you read this book like Dennis Ritchie’s "C" book. I personally read this twice.

If you want to understand the "Globalization” this is must read for you

My Paris Diary-Part2

At the outset we should thank ourselves for meticulous plan that gone into making our first weekend in Paris successful (patting on my back----it is really paining guys).

It took a while to lift our lazy bodies out of bed and head to rest room. It was 11AM -29 Sept 2007 by that time we headed out to catch the metro (M1) to Eiffel, after having two apples-only source of food to keep us alive here in Paris with no access to Indian food as we live in so-called posh area- La’ Defense-we were told Indians cannot afford to put up their shops here .I talk about our change in food habits some time later.
Eiffel tower is very much visible from the area we live; for that matter many monuments. A day before we thought we can walk toward them. One day we tried walking toward Charles de triumph (for us it is CDG), we burnt our fingers (our legs –that would correctly describes). Here everything appear to be very nearer to you, as you walk towards it goes away from you.
We got off the metro after traveling for 20 minutes at the station close to Eiffel.
We were competing with each other that who would have a first look at the Eiffel. We followed blindly the sign boards to reach there. I am no historian to describe what it is, who built that and when; for all that you can refer Wikipedia. I can only say that it is marvelous structure and manmade wonder.
We were warned by our French colleagues in office-reach there early to avoid crowd. Our fat-bums did not co operate with us to reach early. By that time we reached there it was 12’o clock. We have to stand in huge line for over an hour to get the tickets to reach the second floor of Eiffel. For your information there is lift facility to take you to the top.Unknowly we opted for steps to reach there. It was a good decision given my body. We reached first floor, taken pictures, had food and moved to second floor to repeat the same. We also thought of moving to top floor we could not make it as there was huge line to buy tickets. We said to ourselves “As there will be always a next time”. And also we felt that what is there in Eiffel except steal rods properly balanced (pun intended).
We climbed down this time with the help of lift, with feeling that we must come here in the night time to see this wonder glowing with electric lamps. We are planning to go back to this place this weekend in the night time. One update here: Paris is one of the safest places for night travelers-it is my observation. We walked and north and south sides of Eiffel to take some beautiful pictures. Towards evening headed back to barracks (as you know we are soldiers of Manhattan on Mission Paris). As usual we had some apples and bread before hitting the bed.
Next day-30 Sep 2007 –2 days before my birthday (Whole India is waiting to celebrate my b’day in the name of MKGandhi birthday), we headed to Loure Museum, after answering some phone and nature calls. It is also quite near to our place. One Euro away from our place. As you all know it is the biggest museum in the world. Truly it is the biggest. We were told that last weekend of every month, entry is free. Actually we went there to see if that is so.As you know Lady luck never smiles at me,so there is no free entry. We thought entry fee would be quite high. After going there we found that entry fee was only 9 Euros,it is well within our budget for the day, so we just bought tickets’ picked up route maps and went in. It is truly amazing to see so many things under one roof. We spent whole day there-believe me it is not enough. We saved the best for the last-our rendezvous with “Mona Lisa”. Before we left Loure Museum we went to “French paintings” section. I imagined that “Mona Lisa” would be huge Painting; to my surprise; it is just bigger than A-4 size paper. You can have look at all of these pictures at http://picasaweb.google.com/mahesh.thipparthi. Look out for next post on how I celebrated my first birth day outside India and my views on Paris –The city-Culture and also how we are surviving on just apples

My Paris Diary-Part1

It was my maiden visit to any western country. All the worries of logistics are off my mind as my office took care of everything. Our (colleague accompanying me) tickets were booked for Air France. Air Travel was quite smooth. Got into and got off the plane at the right time.
We were welcomed with nice showers with heavy traffic, in Paris. For any Bangalorean, heaven is a place sans heavy traffic. By that standard Paris is no heaven. We felt that way on the first few hours at least. Of course, that perception
is changing.
By that time we arrived in Paris; it was after noon-Tuesday 25th Sep07.Freshed up and headed to nearby Indian restaurent.Reaching that Indian restaurant is a big story in itself; I will reserve that for future writing. With all jetlag headed to office; not to work but have a look at that. To our misfortune Manager was there in office and asked us to set up the entire environment to work; with all cursing we did all that stayed up to 8'oclock in the office. We went back home with the feeling that "Our Bad days are just Started off"

This is the second day: Went to office having some eatables that we carried here by paying "SODEXO COUPOUNS":-it is general feeling among IT People that "SODEXHO is not ours”; and spending SODEXHO is spending somebody's money. Soon we reached office we were asked to go to Client site-Lille.It is another big city north of Paris. Guys, I have been dreaming of traveling by "SUPERFAST Trains" from Hyderabad to New Delhi. My dream came true partially by traveling from PARIS-Lillie-Paris by TGV trains with speed no less than 200Kms.I hope Dr Lallu Yadav would make my dream fully true one day.

Next two days were very much routine. Coding-testing-Checking in the files-label sliding.....all routine stuff.

Then came the Weekend-the time for unraveling the grand ideas we chanced upon in our free time. we went to Eiffel tower, Loure Museum. I’ll write at length about these places in the next post

Who Messed up Telangana? Ringside View of Telangana Society Evolution

Telangana is a northern region of Andhra Pradesh; bordering Maharashtra and Karnataka. It is region which was cradle to most of the revolutions that took place in the south of Vindhya's.Be it first armed struggle against the Nizam rule(mind Telangana did not get its independence with India; it got it after sardar Patel's police action).or Naxalism against Land lords or Bhudhan Movement to disburse land to Poor(It is Rami reddy who gave hundred acres of his land to Vinobha bhave call, on Bahve's visit to Warangal).
All those revolutionary movements have changed the psyche of the people and thinking process of the people. Fortunately this change happened for the betterment of the society. I personally feel that, after independence if there is any place or society, one region which empowered socially on its own is Telangana. This fact was ignored by social scientist of this country, who always obsess with only North of Vindhyachal and some belts of South. Some disagree with my observation by citing that Kerala, Gujarath, Maha rastra. My answer to all o0f them is that that empowerment taken place in all those areas at the instance of the Government. However in telangana it happened due to revolutionary movements; in the absence of government.
All those revolutionary movements aimed at social empowerment but not that of economic empowerment. Though some of those movements partially addressed the economic issues. They did not succeed to the extent they are supposed to. Simple reason for that was means to achieve was wrong in civilized society. The means of these movements may not be right; ends really mattered a lot to the social empowerment of the Telangana society.
Unfortunately Social empowerment did not pave the way for economic development. This is where Political leadership should have worked. Instead Political leadership turned its back to the telangana society which ultimately resulted into chaotic situation that this region in.
How can Telangana can come out of the mess it is in today? Perhaps Economic empowerment (development) in the lines of social empowerment may rid of all the ailments that are plaguing this region.
Who'll bell the cat? Who’ll usher in the new mindset changes into the people of Telangana?
How can they achieve that economic development? Is there need for 21'st century revolution to bring economic prosperity into the lives of Telangana people?
Carving itself out from AP is the solution? Small state answers the problem?
These are all the questions people of telangana should ask themselves to make Telangana a prosperous state.

Read My Stupid Mind; Understand How Badly It Thinks

Months going by, I could not put pen to paper (in the new found terminology, keyboard/mouse to MSWord) for any good thing which I used to do quite often in the past.
I became jaded for no good reason. I guess it is something to do with early symptoms of aging or absolute laziness brought into me by the sophistications that this
Materialistic World made available at my door step or my belly popping.

Today I wake up to Raj’s ripple that he made in the rest room; I sleep pretty much close to that becaz of space constraint pushed by Concrete jungle culture.
Normally these things go unnoticed, as my mind was looking for some thing afresh; for strange reasons known to it, today it caught that by collar and made me to put
my key board (sorry for using very Possessive noun “My keyboard”. Mind you it is not mine but Manhattan’s(the comapny i work for)) to MSword.

Raj’s ripple created ripple in my mind; ripple turned violent lead to metal trauma. As you’ll know mental trauma doubles very minute (my hypothesis but not patented)
if you do not share it (it is akin to Moore’s Law). Though this fellow made big bucks by that hypothesis I fear how muck I make with mine. Its all depends on how much you all
ready to contribute. One thing I am sure to get is “Brickbat” if not “Big bucks”.

All the way to my office (you fool nothing is yours ---I resist using these possessive noun, can’t help much),I would write on something that is useful to my friends.
I commanded all my thinking energies to come up with nice topic to write about. To my surprise none of it is severing me better and following blindly its master- instead of
serving Manhattan Penning some stupid thoughts. I am helpless as I don’t have anything to write about.

Guys you can blame me for that or my intuition for not serving me better….eventually I blame my intuition …..Or my f*********king brain……..may few filthy words inspire my
brain to come up with something better next time……………….

Thanks a lot for taking time off your precious time to read my scribbling ….. If you are too kind to me u may term that as “Manhattan Musings”
