Telangna Movement – National media Coverage

Telangna Movement – National media Coverage

It has always been Telangana that inspired me to put pen to paper. Surprisingly this time a person influences me to write this article. A persona called  Mr.Arya Chowdary, fellow Telanganite, who has been making untiring effort to change one unreasonable, unprofessional  and closed minded individual called T.S Sudheer- NDTV correspondent from Hyderabad , on NDTV website. I feel very sorry for Mr.Arya Cowdary and request him to stop approaching this unlevel headed individual. This is also my request to all fellow Telanganites who are craving for national (Nothing national about these channels. These are notionally national) coverage.
NDTV Anti Telangana Coverage:
It would be wrong on my part paint whole NDTV Team as unprofessional organization and say that NDTV is anti Telangana.I rather treat it as one individual unprofessional handy work. I’ll write few incidents that how NDTV covered and intensions behind it.
 KCR hunger strike:
This was not covered at all initially till his health became very serious. He might have felt that that was not national news. I’ll give benefit of doubt to him. However at the same time he covered attack on Renuka chowdary house at khammam. That filthy woman came on TV and abused the all Telanganites as Gundas  and all. Mind you he has shown Sonia Gandhi poster being torn apart. This gentleman called Telanganites as thugs later on his blogs and all.I told him,in the form of comments, then that “for Pizza khanewaloko(I really doubt on his own money) juvar rotikhanewala looks like thugs only”. However he covers on hourly basis the manufactured united Andhra movement.
Intention: show Telangana movement in bad light and make it as anti-Sonia.
Telnagna Maha Garjana :
This was huge meeting ever happened in the independent India. Politician may claim that 25 lakhs attended the meeting. Let us take more pessimistic figure as 10-15 lakhs.By any standard that is good number. This did not find any mention in his channel. However on 17th morning he files a story saying that “ Jagan exit Good for Telangana- KCR”.Because he wanted to create friction between KCR and Congress. But he conveniently forgets the grand meeting in the evening. Read his stupid, cunning mind.
Phew the list is endless. He and his wife live on the poor of Telangna. I assume that they have some quota of stories to cover monthly or something. What these duo pick up not anything but “Lambada women selling kids stories” or death due to harassment or something. If they have mind of their own they should have gone to bottom of the issue, insteading of mere reporting that. For  this gentlemen what is  national news is worth reporting from Andhra Pradesh – Mr Rajasekhraa reddy – twirling his moustache not the hardships of fluoride victims in Nalgonda. This gentlemen so obsessed with animals that he always compared Mr. YSR with Tiger and his Son with Cub. He conveniently forgets that this tigers invasion of jungle and his loot in Andhra Pradesh. I asked many times on NDTV website stop doing this “Junglee” reporting and do some journlism.Sorry this gentleman might have forgotten basics of Journalism after living off the largesse of Andhra politicians. This guy is not Andhra wala as many say he is keralite. That is reason I told him( in the form comments) “it seems you have forgotten basics of journalism and learn from fellow journalist- Amarnath.k.Menon of India today to report unbiasedly). By the way A.K.Menon is Tejadeep kaur hubby( he is some DG in AP Police). I hit this guy many times through comments. NEVER abused him. So he blocked me from commenting on NDTV website. You can understand this guy mentality, who has no room for criticism when it comes to his own affairs. However this same gentleman criticizes KCR and Telangana movement.
Other National Media
CNN IBN Pretthi singh, anyway doe not report against or for so it does not matter. We know pretty well that Hindu editorial policy is against Telangana. Some reputed weeklies like Outlook, India Today and Tehelka  are covering really well.
What is the message for Telangana Intelligentsia?
KCR and other intellectual are very well aware of that. Unlike many of us they do not complain. Instead they took the practical(political) path.In the current day politics; policticains at the national level are intelligent enough get the correct source of ionformation.Telangna declaration did not come becaz of National media coverage but here the heat generated by us. See irony in this country. In Manipur poor social activist Sharmila on fast unto death for the last 10 years  for abolition of Armed Forces special power act (AFSPA).For the same thing In Kashmir  people on street; our country constituted committee in Kashmir and hardily given damn to Sharmila. If you have listen to Neera radia tapes, you will realize the shady business these media personalities do. Do not forgot the fact the why Telugu media covered manufactured united Andhra movement; apart from that is owned by them;they were after ad revenue carrot Mr. Lagadapati shown. In this country everything is corrupt. To think that these journalists could not be bought by some vested interests is naïve.
My dear fellow Telanganites do not get discouraged by the no coverage of National media. I have a question for you all. How many of us know the fact that women fighting for separate Uttaranchal when they are on their way to New Delhi, they were raped by Uttar Pradesh people at Kathroli ? Women started early and men followed later; before men reached there they were beaten and raped. Many great moments of movements do go unreported or under reported; that does not mean that we should be discouraged.
Telangana has produced great telugu journalists of impeccable integrity such as Allam Narayana , K srinivas,Pasam yadgiri ,N.Venugopal ,Nageswar and many more.Whether you know it or not most of the people who write in most reputed  magazine across world - Indian fortnight mazgazine “ The economic and Political weekly(EPW)” are from Telangana. We all should take a pledge today that next batch of intellectuals from south India should be form Telangana. I do not bracket these few idiots like Notional TV correspondents with intellectuals. Do not forget the fact that Dec 9 Telangna declaration is the result of untiring intellectual battle  waged by Telangna  leaders ( like Jaipal reddy,Kesava rao) along with our Leader KCR political strategies. Let us all pledge that we give all the intellectual depth that required for the betterment of Telangana and also safe guard the interests of Telangana. Let us diversify our professions across all professions instead hanging onto few sectors. Let us see an opportunity  in this ;instead of worrying about what some unprofessional reports about.

Why KCR is an Idea?

The idea of Telangana, if I have to define, is fighting for justice at all costs against all manifestations of social ills. What is an idea? Idea is something which awakens, empowers, inspires to fight, and gives a sense of purpose. This is what Telangana movement is all about. When a personal trait of an individual help in achieving the very goal society is fighting for then individual becomes an idea. It is very rarely we see in the history that people become synonymous with causes they are fighting for. This happened few times in the history. For instance, MKGandhi was the face of Indian independence, Dr.King was the face of civil rights movement and recently Anna Hazare became the face of Anti-corruption movement. And in the case of Telangana – Mr. KCR was the face of movement as he did all it takes to give a purpose to whole society.
Telangana and fighting are inseparable as we have a great history of fighting against all odds be it against powerful Nizam or landlords or Andhra rulers. History observers say that Telangana was always let down by its own leaders. If you observe Telangana history it is always common people who led from the front and leader followed later to hijack. Thus there was always a trust deficit between Telangana people and its politicians. It reached a point that it resigned to its fate. This was the very reason Telangana challenged Mr. KCR to prove his credentials time and again and once it realized he is the leader they have been looking for, then they rallied behind him. Let me take you through past ten odd years to understand this man and what he has done to Telangana society.
Low confidence
As they say history is always written by winners, so Andhra establishment in Telangana rewrote the whole history books sans mention of Telangana word. Mr. Chandrababu Naidu went to the extent that he has given a ruling in the AP assembly through speaker that the word “Telangana” must not be mentioned in assembly instead it should be referred as “backward region”. Every oppressor knows what can unseat him. Even Telangana oppressor knows Telangana monster can bulldoze Andhra hegemony if not controlled. The identity of Telangana is replaced cleverly by identity of Telugu.Telangan language and culture was degraded in movies and official circles.Telangan society was pushed to believe that they were inferior lot. Telangana people changed Telangana slang to suit the Andhra slang .Telangana entrepreneurs are not encouraged as most of the secretariat and other agencies such as APIIC and SFCs were staffed with Andhra.Thi s is a systematic suppression and looting of one region by the other in the name of language.
In 2009 when I wrote an article about KCR, a reader commented that he returned from US to run a business in Hyderabad as his father always used to discourage him saying we, Telanganites should not be doing business as it was privy of Andhra elite. The self-belief of Telangana society plummeted to that level. This was not the story of one family but of every family story in Telangana. Andhra thought policing and control over Telangana was total.

New Confidence
In times like this ray of hope beaconed on Telangana in the form of KCR.With the emergence of TRS, KCR started explaining the Andhra exploitation in chaste Telangana slang and Telangana slang has started appearing in prime time TV news. It is very refreshing to note that Telangana dialect is in free flow across offices and on the streets. He exhorted youth why we could not make movies and movies started coming out till that time personal fiefdom of Andhra families. He has also proven a point that Telangana politicians can establish political parties and can run successfully amid all the turbulences. He identified Andhras were ruling the roost through media, newspapers; pooled in the resources to establish newspapers and TV channels to further the cause of Telangana. With his arrival, suppressed Telangana society has found a new found confidence.
He never minced words to explain to the Andhras exploitation. Even Andhra people started feeling the pinch. A case in point is -an Andhra mimicry artist was saying in “Open Heart With RK” that, sometimes he gets a feeling why he born that side of the Krishna river, if he was born other side he must have been spared from KCR tirade. This speaks volume how enemy was pushed to the corner.
Cultural renaissance
As somebody puts it, brilliantly, a multidimensional like Telangana can't be comprehended by simple minds and that was the reason Telangana goes unreported and this phenomenon is under understood across country. People who visited Telangana villages during SJS (All people strike) could only gauge the depth of cultural richness of Telangana society. It is very refreshing to see how many Telangana folks songs were written and sung to enthuse the crowd and how many of them turned into self-financed private albums.
I still remember the words of KCR saab when he said when Telangana people start writing fire oozes out not words as we have strong emotional attachment to subjects. This was only KCR trademark quality- a compassionate poet and hard taskmaster politician both at same time and he switches between one role and other effortlessly and this very quality endeared him to both class and mass. This was the inspiration to most of the people to put up websites and blogs to promote Telangana movement. It is no wonder that we have the best editors form Telangana be it Allam Narayan or K Srinivas or Katta shaker reddy.
Culminating figure
KCRs greatest contribution to Telangana movement was to unite people from all walks of life. Right and left of political line were aligned, poor and rich sharing same space, fortunate and unfortunate occupied with same thoughts, near and far fighting for the same and village, cities, foreign cities are on same line of thought. I just wonder if any other movement in the world united so many. With their innovative programs they made to sit all caste groups to sit together share a meal and danced together. It will be forever etched in our memories how Telangana activists used to support each other- one takes lathi charge from one hand and tries saving fellow activists from other. The camaraderie and brotherhood this movement bought can never be forgotten.
All is well and Father of All
Last 4 years were most emotionally draining period for Telangana society. Some people succumbed to by choosing death as option and others were silently taking it.Everyday was anxious day, you never know what is going to be in new paper tomorrow and what new rumor or what new innovative way to stop Telangana.Eevry political joker was a threat as everybody was looking like a potential destructor to the idea of Telangana, given the economic might of individual. Though repeatedly KCR has given assurances but they could not withstand the propaganda Andhra mills working on. In this emotional roller coaster time, whole society was looking for his assured words. A society which was robbed of its leadership who has spine and can talk for it, he is “no worries man” at the same time worrying figure for all Telangana detractors. At times youth of Telangana society forgot about their own parents for counseling on Telangana issue but waiting for few words of assurance from this man.Everybody saw a father figure in him
Political strategy
He had enviable political career till he shunned the comfort of taking shade under the umbrella of TDP to float a political party to fight for the cause of Telangana separate state. He emerged victorious in the very next elections and subsequently in many other elections. He is the only politician who used the “Resignations” as a weapon to reflect the public mood and his party has the highest number of resignations in typical 5 year duration. In times when politician cling to power till his deathbed, he demonstrated that giving up power -being a minister without any portfolio or giving up MLA and MP posts. He ensured that all ruling and opposition parties toe the line of Telangana by having electoral alliances with them in 2004 and 2009 general elections thus exposing the duplicity of their support to Telangana cause. It needed absolute political brilliance of the bony man to invite TDP and congress along with every other political party to Telangana den.He ensured that every political party in AP stood nakedly before the public of Telangana. This kind of political expose forced government of India to finally concede.
Here is person who influenced individual thoughts and channelized all energies to a cause and finally ensured that we collectively achieved it. So KCR is philosophy and thought and it is permanently etched in every Telangana person memory forever.

Telangana Development the “Orange” Way

Few months ago I was travelling from Chennai to Hyderabad on personal visit; i had booked tickets on bus operated by “Orange Travels” as I did not get tickets on train. This bus was fitted everything that any modern traveller can look for, as  bus movement could be tracked from internet as this was  fitted with a GPS device, also you could preorder food and sweets from any chosen good restaurants in Hyderabad and they deliver at your seat and they serve some free snacks and water as journey starts. On top of all it was said they are punctual and in fact, they were. By any standards, this is quite luxury any traveller can afford.
As I was not carrying any book, so my concentration drifted to the conversation that drivers were having- they were talking in chaste Telangani (if I may term Telangana Telugu as that way). The moment drivers notice that passenger is from Andhra, these drivers started adding “andi” for every word they utter and also changed their slang to Andhra dialect flawlessly and continued their conversation in chaste Telangani as the passenger settles in his seat. It was amazing to see a Telanganite displaying so much business acumen and was wondering “you can’t keep your natural skills in dormant forever and given an opportunity every skill can be acquired and used to the perfection”. As I get off the bus, I asked bus boy where he belonged and who were the owners and he replied he was from Mahabubngar and owners are “Manolle”-that means Telanganites.
In hostile environment where government heads are having no love for Telanganite, we are making headway in many places. “Orange travels” story is the best example. There are many green shoots like a orange travel in otherwise barren land- Telangana. This small incident throws away many lessons to the Telangana society –we have all it takes to build institutions,-we are bold when it comes to doing business as we are lion hearted thanks to our Muslim rulers and friends
What should be our economic Model?
As we have seen in “Orange case”, in small scales we did better without much of the support of government. How can we take it further to build bigger and better companies to employ more  people and bring joy to everybody and what economic philosophy we should be wedded to achieve great joy. Given the fact that state is around the corner, what kind of economic model we have to choose. It is high time Telangana society should recognize the fact that jobs can’t be created only in government. However larger number should be created in private only. We have to drive out the thought that jobs means only government jobs .We need to encourage private sector in a big way and across the state. And also we need to ensure that all the un-skilled and semi-skilled jobs are reserved for the local people and government do it best to create enough pool of semi-skilled people.
For historic reasons, Telangana society and Telangana intelligentsia has love for red way (left wing model-communism) .In changed circumstances globally “red way” model may not work well given the insurmountable challenge ahead of us. We may need to embrace “white way (right wing model-capitalism)”. ”White way” in totality may not suit society as such as we were the major victims of “Andhra Capitalism” in the past 20 years as it uprooted  most of the villagers to give land to Andhra capitalist forces. We need to have right wing economic policy with left heart which is judicious mix of both. We need to trek the middle path-if I may say so – “Orange way”. It is tough task ahead for Telangana political establishment.
Environment to experiment:
The only way we can create more entrepreneurs is -giving the people an opportunity to experiment and fail. Part of it has to be created by the society, parents and education system. And other part should be supported by the government by promoting the environment in terms of easy loans for entrepreneurs of all sizes. Historically loan disbursement is the lowest in Telangana. Partly reason is that most of the Bank managers were from Andhra and they were circumspect and also never understood the society. Government must make it a point to populate most of the banks with people of the land.
This can be done at three levels. Micro level – Allowing easy loans for un-skilled people so that they can be entrepreneurial and move away from agriculture. Macro level – For medium level entrepreneurs through state finance corporation and third, most importantly, for students at the university level.SFCs must provide portion of their allocated money for universities so that students can get a chance to experiment. Even money squandered, that is social cost.
Education:
Lack of education damaged the Telangana prospects two times greatly in the past 50 years. In the early 1960s, we did not have English medium educated workforce helped Andhra lobby a lot and that way they have developed strong hold on the administration. In the second wave lack of technical education did not help us to gain entry into so many central government backed PSUS in Hyderabad like ECIL, BHEL and all that. We could not capitalize on that though they are sitting at the epicenter of Telangana society because of lack of technical education. These two things put us at historical disadvantage .It is high time that we correct it.
General Education
Telangana parents are scarifying everything possible to educate their children English medium coupled with KCR vision to create government run English medium residential schools should solve the main issues of modern education across the board from village level to city. Current history books make us to believe that history started from 1956 Nov 1 itself and they conveniently ignore the fact there was a state before that. And children are made to study about all the important places in Andhra like Annavram temple and all that, though historical and famous places in Telangana are neglected. There many wrongs we are made to study. We need to rewrite the whole history and also all Telangana great people stories must be told to younger generation. We need to set up “Indoctrinate committee” to rid of all negative portrayal of Telangana in the text books and set the records straight. We also need to fill up all our text books with stories that people can achieve anything.
Skill education
We need to solve our historical second problem- giving technical and vocational training to Telangana people. Andhra governments have succeeded in not skilling the people of Telangana to grab all technical opportunities in technical field. We need to take this on war footing basis to skill the people with what industry demand. We need to do this in a big way. Mind you Telangana has least number of Polytechnics and ITIs. We need to consolidate all of technical institutes we have and make them centers of excellence. There is no point in allocating few more polytechnic institutes to districts based on the demand. Instead we need to take holistic picture and consolidate these institutes and make them center of excellence and creating them across state and move the students from region to other. We need roughly organize our polytechnics and ITI under one banner something like following.
·         Telangana Skill building Institute (Construction-Carpentry and House wiring, Plumbing)
·         Telangana Skill building Institute (Electronics)
·         Telangana Skill building Institute (Human Resources-Office Works, English Speaking)
University education
For the namesake or appease few districts there is point in giving university to each distircts.Yes, universities should be spread across Telangana but they should be center of excellences not mere universities with all courses. We have general universities covering all disciplines like OU and Central and all other universities must be “Centre of excellence”. For example – Palamur University be science university and Nalgonda university be some other.
We need to kill all our private engineering colleges that  mush roomed across Telangana who are not maintain any quality by withdrawing the largesse that current government handing – fee reimbursement. That will have natural death. Then build few engineering schools with public-private partnership in the lines of polytechnics.
Health:
We have the worst government health facilities perhaps in south India. We need to have government hostotal coupled with college in every district head quarter. And major hospitals in every Parliamentary constituency to deburden on Osmania and other hospital as they can concentrate only on major cases. As KCR said many times if at least two major hospitals are created in the army lines and nothing could be asked more.
Irrigation:
Telangana farmer was as much killed by lack of major irrigation as much as minor irrigation. Andhra government’s systemic paralysis they inflicted on Telangana tank system more unpardonable than major irrigation. There goes a story that Brahmananda reddy went on record saying that if your tanks were full how come water reaches coastal lands. What Nizam did to Telangana tank system and Andhra government undone by killing all our lakes.
We need to rebuild and relay the most of the lakes. Let us not go behind big projects. Let us start small. One big project on Krishna and one on Godavari and nothing more. Let us rebuild all our lake as they need immediate repair and support. Let us not do the same mistake as what AP has done by siphoning so many funds into contractors pockets and instead filling their pockets let us fill the trusty throats and parched lands of Telangana. By sticking to the simple philosophy start small and simple and solve one problem at a time.
Migration Policy:
Great Nizam rulers did as part of their policy encouraging other people to come and contribute to the society and we need to continue that and apply the same within region as well. If I have to single out biggest problem of Andhra Pradesh experiment had – one way migration or lack of migration of one region to other within State. Intra migration and inter migration helps a lot in making of any society. The policy of migration should be encouraged and inculcated as a part of the public policy of the government of the day. Telangana government should encourage this to avoid any future conflicts.
Let us not forget that there are bound to be issues within Telangana in future. Some kind of disparities within Telangana. It is possible that north Telangana may dominate Telangana as they were the protagonist of whole Telangana movement. I hope that will not happen. Simply reason being to make Telangana prosperous we need to exploit two rivers Krishna and Godavari. The moment you exploit Krishna water south Telangana gets its due and the moment you exploit Godavari you will have north Telangana gets its due.Thoguh first Telangana movement was primarily led by central and south Telangana and second Telangana movement south Telangana failed to throw up a strong leader to shoulder the movement. We need to solve this potential problem. This has very simple solution- let us move people from one region to other and this should be kind of forced migration. When people movement happens, sub regional cultures can be understood and in turn problems .Problem is half solved when it is understood.
I never ventured into north of Telangana nor my family entire life as there was never a need to do that. I do not know how Nizamabad or Karimnagar looks. This might be the problem of many in south and does not augur well for future of Telangana.
Intra State Migration
Migration can’t happen on its own and we need to have some public policy in place to encourage that. The only way government can encourage is by building center of excellences across the state and forcing the people to move there to work and study. Creating industries across width and breadth of state can force migration naturally. Taking district as unit to for government transfers is another policy. Yes I understood they are radical but in the best interest of state we need to do that.
Inter State Migration
As much as we want intra state migration, we need to encourage interstate migration. Great learning can happen by interacting with different cultures and people. This has to be part of public policy and must be state funded one. We need to build “Telangana Bhavans” across neighboring states and also in some major cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata- where subsidized accommodation must be provided. So that people have a nest for them even if they go out to faraway place in search of job or poets and social scientists go there to establish interactions with other society. They must be culture centers and meeting points for all the Nonresident Telangana people.
Culture and Cinéma
Urdu Proéminence:
We have seen how language can be used as political weapon to suppress the democratic aspirations of other region and also how danger it is to tie you to language based politics. And it is high time if we, as a society, realize and stop seeing language through political or religion prism. Unfortunately some people started equating language with religion and we have to shun it.let us not treat Urdu as language of Muslims alone and instead see it as means to understand a part of the society. Urdu needs to be given as much prominence as any language gets. Let us not have Telugu university and let it be named as University of Languages and let each language flourish there.
Folk Artists Promotion
I do not think in independent India if any movement created so many folk songs as much as Telangana movement. Telangana sensitization happened mostly through the writing of Telangana artists than KCR speeches. Telangana movement and society thrived on artists we should never forget their contribution either to Telangana movement or to the society.
We need to promote it so that even in future they represent voice for the voiceless. Some of the artists may not be at largesse of the government just to avoid conflict of interests. Government of the day must promote wholeheartedly and understand the true meaning what their artist represent and take corrective actions instead of suppressing their voice. The true way we can honor them by giving all prominent artists as honorary professors in University of Languages and Culture to do their work from their own comfort and Creating separate chairs in the universities for each folk arts so that they can be passed on next generations.
Mini Telanganas
We need to create Mini Telanganas- good housing society which equally represents every districts in Telangana- this should roughly in the “Kutapllay Model”- NTR and Chandra Babu created these housing society to migrate Andhra people from there to Telangana. This also helps Telangana other way- sub regional cultures can be understood better and bond better. We also need to create more Mini Telanganas where Andhra settlement is more to neutralize their effect . Let us not forget the fact that-even in Telangana there might some Andhra pockets that will influence. We need to neutralize them politically fully by infiltrating Telangana population there. Let us create ‘Mini Telngana” in Kukat pallys across Hyderabad and in Khammam also. This great way to neutralize their effect on policies.Mini Telanganas can also be created by deploying the Industries in those areas.
Cinema
My Kerala friends say that Kerala cinema has many stories on Telangana situation and conflicts with in Telangana. Given long turmoil Telangana went though there are many human stories to be told to the world. Let us give good cinemas to the India by telling human stories in the lines of Kerala, Bengal or Iranian cinema not amalapuram types.Let us take Narsinga Rao or Syam Benegal  for inspiration not Raghavendra rao.We need to build “Telangana Institute of Drama and Fine Arts” in the lines of Prithvi theatre in Bombay ,in each and every distict all kind of arts can be encouraged and performed for a nominal or subsidized cost. Let those institutes be served as cultures centers and artists makers to the nation and world.
Sports
It is bitter fact that Telangana youth are succumbing to bad habits at very early age in villages, their energies must be channelized for right sports. Creating residential sport school in every district may be good idea.

Police Reform:
To suppress the leftwing extremism, police were given too many powers. It really went too far.It went to an extent that normal crimes are often dealt with encounter killings by utter disregard to constitutional rights. Even recently for not allowing a police to have drinking in my farm, I was threatened to be arrested put behind the bars. Common constable is so much powered under the grab of handling naxalism as anybody can be termed as naxal. The way they treated citizen while Telangana movement is on, under the instructions of high office, is in public domain.
Telangana government must make every effort to humanize them by involving them in social programs and making them accountable for even certain social obligations like every student under his jurisdiction must be in school and also divesting some powers. Even in police training, it was taught to them that Telangana movement was not a just one. If Telangana officers are not there we must ensure to take more neutral police officers from north India. We need to handle all these issues at the root.
Close scrutiny of Telangana history reveals the fact that Telangana is never at peace for the last 70 years or so.I reckon that Telangana is inching towards most peaceful state now. I understand some of the ideas are utopian. And it is high time that we sit together and build our dream land.

Jai Telangana.

Battleground Telangana: Chronicle of an Agitation – Book Review

Battleground Telangana: Chronicle of an Agitation by Kingshuk Nag, Resident editor of TOI Hyderabad, is an honest attempt to write Issue of Telangana as dispassionately as possible. At times he was very critical of Telangana movement and other places he was very appreciative of the fact that this agitation is genuine people movement.
Author starts with history of Andhra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. He took lot of pain to explain Telugus history, “First freedom struggle of Telangana -1969” and economic reasons behind the Telangana cause - in the subsequent chapters, and then he enters contemporary history of Telangana where covers -ups and downs of TRS and “second freedom struggle”. Title”Chronicle of Agitation” bests suits for these few chapters as he did nothing but documenting the recent events in chronological order. As an editor of newpaper, certainly he must be privy to so much of off the record information. He should have spiced few chapters here with that insight. Though contemporary history he covered most dispassionately, he did not offer anything new to the reader who is well versant with recent incidents. As somebody said contemporary history is prone to criticism-everybody has his own version; Nag tried accommodating all view points with finesse.
No agitation or incident of historical importance can go without it being seen through caste prism. He labored a lot to explain the caste web of Andhra Pradesh. This chapter his close to my heart as he did splendid job to explain the caste politics of Andhra Pradesh  in no sense manner.  How Telangana when formed disturbs whole cast equations he meticulously explained.
This book did not go without its minor factual errors. As author claims this was proof read by editor from New Delhi, who was not conversant with politics of Andhra Pradesh, that editor deservers all accolades. There are some factual errors like YSR died on the way to village in Nellore in place of Chittor. Incident related to KCR arrest in Karimnagar were not documented to the details and accuracy.
Though, I appreciate the fact that this book revolves mostly around the issue of Telangana for all right reasons. However, he should have documented kind of leadership that this agitation has thrown from villages to towns to cities. He also failed to capture the kind Cultural Revolution that this agitation fathered and as a result innumerable songs that common people have written and how many cultural entities propped up across Telangana.
I suggest this book to all who want to know about Telangana movement and also for those non Telangana friends who naively asks on office dinner tables Why Telangana? .
P.S: I must thank FlipKart for delivering this book in less than 24 hours and my wife for letting me read the same in 5 hours uninterruptedly:)

Dear Andhra NRI Friend,

For very longtime I am yearning to write this letter to you. Sorry for being late. Nothing held me back for this long, other than my belief in you that attitudinal change happens one day or the other. Sorry to say this friend, you let me down. Long maintained my personal belief has been rattled by your chronic disease- selective amnesia, when it comes to issue of Telangana. Now I get a doubt whether you can still remember me.
I am – Mahesh Thipparthi guy with fat bum. Buddy please do not claim that Andhras helped (developed) to grow my bum. Please acknowledge, this is my own effort. If my name is not enough for you to recall my association with you. Let me tell our meeting point-“Park Café” at Chadar Ghat Bridge-where we had chat over cup of Tea (Coffee) I ordered Tea, Samosa and you ordered Coffee, Punugulu which you did not get. You remember; you complained then that “Why we won’t get coffee, punugulu in Hyd”.I still remember the way you looked down upon Telangana culture and food habits. I thought that it would go as you stay here more. I also thought you change with time. After that you migrated to America. I’ll keep it to myself how many fake degree/experience certificates you created to get US Visa.
Going by the comments you are writings about Telangana on your websites and telephone calls you are making to news channels that all Telugus should be united forever and there is no Telangana sentiment at all and only 1000 people want it (Only Harish Rao got around 1 lakh majorityJ). Of course you are no longer mentioning this stupid argument after By- elections. Instead you have taken up other stupid arguments. There is some sanity is still there otherwise insane human being that you are.
I really doubt why these news channel guys give some much preference to calls from US, as if citizen here are less important. You also said, if I can recall, that 3 people gathered in New York or somewhere (one of them is claimed from Telangana) decided that Telangana is not required at all. That day friend, I fell down laughing at your stupid understanding of situation. And also your professor, Mohan XXXX, was saying that Gentlemen agreement was private one it does not hold any validity. It is said that surroundings do have profound effect on ones thought process. Even your stay at America – that land known for its liberal values and justice did not change you any which way. Friend if you do not mind I have a question – have you ever mingled with any Native American there all along your 10 year stays there? Or simply tuning in to stupid telugu news channels primarily anchored by Anakapalli gang?
I have got innumerable things that you said immaturely of Telangana. Dear friend, for want of time I write you next letter with all that as soon as I can. I have no hope left in me that you open up your mind and think rationally about anything including Telangana. By any chance you have good news to share feel free to drop me email.

Telangana Irrigation figures and its true face

“I talked to a senior officer and he said that more than 75% of irrigation budget (which incidentally happens to consume the largest pie here) is being spent in Telangana”.
A Good friend of mine puts this question to me. Here is my answers to him.
You better be warned that never believe in percentage figures when someone cites in AP. People of AP are so good at coming with percentage for everything under the sun. They say “90% people are corrupt”; “80% of this group is like that”;"50% people are like that" and many more you encounter as you go along. Some time myself surprised at the dexterity with which there guys come up with percentage figures. Even in remote villages this is the same case. I like to term this is as "AP Flawed Percentage Theory (APFPT)". I justify why it is flawed one. Why the state that is obsessed with "percentages" produces more engineers than business man? I feel businessmen are adept at these percentagesJ. It is also no surprise that Satyam fiasco emanated from AP- the great land of numbers and percentages. Jokes apart let me tell you what is happening under these false statistics. Here is my understanding of the situation.
Main Rivers and Dams
Just give you back drop.AP has three regions namely Andhra (Coastal Andhra), Royalseema, Telangna. AP has two main rivers namely Krishna and Godavari flowing through it. Krishna enters AP @ MahabubNagar and culminates into Sea in Krishna district. Godavari makes its way into AP @ adlibbed and reaches its destination in Godavari districts. In addition these two rivers there are two more small ones - Tungabhadra and Penna. These two are in royalseema region. Going by the Batchawat tribunal AP has been divided into 4 or 5 basins or more, namely Krishna basin, Godavari, Tungabhadra and Penna basin. The simple philosophy of this basin theory is that places fall under their basins are legitimate claimants for water. Bye any yardstick this is just philosophy.
What is Jalayagnam?
Assuming that my “flaw philosophy” is flawed and say really 75% is allotted to Telangana and also we have to keep in mind that this allotment happened only from 2004 (this is due to heat generated by Telangana movement). Before that there are meager allocations for Irrigation. As you know "statics are like Women skirts what they reveal is trivial what they conceal is vital”. Let me tell you how false information is passed around.  To understand this let us see how “Jalayagnam” is detrimental to the Telangana.
This is cunning scheme under which Irrigation projects are undertaken. Let me explain you what is the plan. In AP, as I said earlier, we have two rivers and two main projects (dams) one is @ srishailam (left is Mahabub Nagar- Telangana) ,right canal is in Kurnool dt of Royalseema. And other one at Nagarjunasagar dam in Nalgonda Dt of Telangana. I am no irrigation expert. The details I am providing may not be to the details. However contours of the details are undisputable. Take my word for that.
Under Jalayagnam mainly following projects are undertaken.
1. Devadula Lift irrigation(Telangana) - Godavari
2. Parnahitha-Chevella (Telangana) - Godavari)
3. DummuGudem ( Telangana)
3. Polavaram (Andhra)
4.Pothireddipadu head regulation (Royalseema )( Krishna river)
There are many small projects here and there.
State discrimination
PothireddyPadu as I mentioned above is for royalseema. This is project designed for flood water. If there is excessive flow in Srisialam, flood water should be diverted to this project. Under this Jalayagnam, the storage limit of Srisailam is increased so that there will be more water of Pothireddypadu.Under this scheming, in place of excessive water they can directly take "actual water”. This width of this regulator is increased to take more water to Kadapa - YSR home district. This illegal because Kadapa falls under Penna -Basin. It means you are diverting Krishna basin water to Penna basin.     Leave that. One can claim that we are under so called fucking Telugu state - we need to adjust. People of Telangana might have magnanimous enough to concede that. It was done under most clandestine way. This concept of “Oneness” was chosen when other party interests are paramount.
As you can guess easily, this project creates deficit in Krishna River. To the left of Krishna - we have Telanagna. Both Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar Left canals are for Telangana which have exponentially less capacity to right canal. How these projects are constructed to suit their interests is a different story altogether let me reserve that for future. I suggest you to watch movie - "China Town". This exactly reflects the Telangana irony.
That means less water. Anyway Telangana is getting less water, it is least of Jalayagnam worry. There is also less water to Andhra through right Canal. SO this deficit needs to be bridged. What is the way?  Bring the water from Godavari!   How? Now you have Dommegudem (Telangana) project but to bridge the deficit created by Pothireddypadu.for whose benefit? For the benefit of downstream Andhra region.  I told statics do conceal many things. This is cleverest way to cheat people. Project in the of Telangana but help Andhra. On the way does it irrigate Parched Telangana Lands? No.
I must tell you one incident here. After Nuclear Pact, Center has given permission to AP Govt for nuclear plant. This gentle man wanted to put the nuclear plant in Kadapa. As you know how much water nuclear plant needs. This water also he was planning to get from Pothireddypadu. His scheme was to loot Telangana due share under the false national pride. Thank god it did not materialize; God has taken this soul form further devastation. As you are claiming YSR death did not create any vacuum in AP, It has given sigh of relief to people of Telangana from looting. By Indian tradition (I feel ashamed to consider myself as Indian, given the Indian establishment indifference to state discrimination) we seldom celebrate death. But we celebrated it. In the recent past I have seen people celebrating when Saddam Hussein hanged to death.
 Water to Hyderabad?
As you know Hyderabad falls under Krishna -basin.Hyderabd thirst must be quenched by Krishna River that is what law says. There are many projects designed for that. But they do not find mention in "Jala Yagnam".   They came up with one more project (I forgot its name), to bring water from Godavari. This project not even allows the other districts drinking water needs. But only for Hyderabad.  What is the story here? Krishna water is for some special people? And whose account this project gets into? Telangana. It is like I have my money in your account but I’ll use it but you end up paying taxes and do not have any right to use.
This systematic looting did not end with irrigation; it speared its tentacles to every possible field. I want to end this with one real story. In Mr. Naidu régime, there was DGP called H.J.Dora.Prof. Jayasankar on some occasion had to explain the systematic exploitation of Telangana to Mr. Naidu in the presence of H.J.Dora. At the end of the meeting H.J.Dora remarked “It is absurd. If what you are saying is true, there should be revolution by now”. This incident shows two things. One is how ignorant people are of facts. It is no surprise that you senior officer was giving such an absurd figure. Even our oppressors are bit reasonable saying only “50%” went into Telangana.
And other thing is that oppression has got it limits. It surely turns into revolution; already it is. Few timid people like me who may take refuge under the “materialistic world benefits” and express that anger from the comfort of computer. However, always there will be some who can’t take thing easy. Fortunately that tribe is in abundance in Telangana.
